I don't know if this is a Windows service thing, but when AbelCam is running as a service I don't get sound on motion. Even to the extent that when I start the service with a UI, the UI is silent when it tests the sound via the Test Sound button on the config page.
When run not as a service, the sounds work fine.
[ .. but the display gets messed up by my camera / video driver :-( ]
Is there anything I can do to enable sound when run as a service?

Since nobody else has said anything I'll tell you what I know about this. Not that it's much help...
I tried this on my system and the sounds work fine regardless of whether running as service or app, user interface or not. IOW I can't reproduce the problem here. I am running:
WinXP Pro with SP-3
AbelCam 2.2.4 (release 2008-06-02)
A Typhoon (aka In-Sight) cam (not that the cam should matter)
I also tried the same tests on Win2K SP-4 and that also worked okay. If you're running Vista then somebody else will have to help you since I don't have it.

This might depend on the audio driver - maybe some audio drivers run on user level?
AbelCam as service runs as user SYSTEM who might not have the required settings.

Thanks for the responses.
I've tried setting up an administrative user and using that to run the service.
I've tried v2.2.3 and 2.2.4;
I was on XP Home Ed. SP2, now SP3.
Still no luck.
I'm using a SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio card with a Microsoft Hardware Compatibility Driver (v5.12.1.5243).
I also have a Philips VOIP321 driver for my SkypePhone.
Ideas welcome.
Thanks.
