Shoot, was hoping I could simply attach the files with an explanation. I purchased the BCN-501 camera off of Buy.Com because it was:

Wireless
Had Infrared
PTZ
Cheap

The webserver in it is mediocre at best, it always installs an unsigned active-x control which is a pain in the butt. So, I setup Abelcam to do the work. Here's what I had to do:

Configuration, Options, select I am Abelcam Expert.

Cameras, Add Cam, Web Video, changed capture interface to IPPtzCamera.

Select camera that was created, and Config.

Name: Whatever you want

Web Video URL button.
-URL is http://cameraipaddress/still.jpg
set your authentication.

It is a JPEG Source and I use Sync mode, either one works. Test and save.

Under IP PTZ:
Camera type: AbelCam PTZ Cam 0 (or whatever number u need)
PTZ Write Steps

Relative to Image

Control Configuration:
Range: Pan Min=-175 Max=175
Tilt Min=-100 Max=180

Zoom Min=1, Max=2

Set:
URL to move home is /Pantiltctrl.cgi?Home=1

Timers:
Time required to Move home, I set at 15.

PAN:
Left=/Pantiltctrl.cgi?Pan=1
Right=/Pantiltctrl.cgi?Pan=2

TILT:
Up=/Pantiltctrl.cgi?Tilt=2
Down=/Pantiltctrl.cgi?Tilt=1

Zoom is blank. Save and test.

I have a couple of questions for you gurus out there...

First, the camera has an IR source on it that you can turn and off with the command /Pantiltctrl.cgi?IR=3. How can I set up a button to turn that on/off from the webpages?

Second, there is a MJPG source on the camera. The URL is /video.cgi that I can find. It tests OK, but I do not see any video. Any ideas?

Last: Anyone familiar with a RdPTCTRL.cgi? The only thing I see it returns is the word return.

Update on the Timer setting for moving home. It should be set to 31.

On the image source, the HTML to view it is:
<IMG SRC=/video.cgi WIDTH='+va_width+' HEIGHT='+va_height+'>

So would the URL be /video.cgi?WIDTH=640&HEIGHT=480?

Hello Justin
the camera has an IR source on it that you can turn and off with the command /Pantiltctrl.cgi?IR=3. How can I set up a button to turn that on/off from the webpages?

You can create a Proxy entry for this one,
Name: IR on
Address: iron
URL: http://cameraipaddress/Pantiltctrl.cgi?IR=3

Name: IR off
Address: iroff
URL: http://cameraipaddress/Pantiltctrl.cgi?IR=0

Like this you can access the IR control as
http://localhost:8080/iron
http://localhost:8080/iroff

So would the URL be /video.cgi?WIDTH=640&HEIGHT=480?
That looks reasonable.
Don't know what is the default size for this camera.

Hello JustinBl,

I have been looking for a similar cheap wireless PTZ internet cam. Can you please share how has been your experience with this camera until now configured with AbelCam.

I have been reading some reviews about BCN-501 on Amazon which are not very good. You can check for yourself. It says that the supplied software does not work with Windows 7 and it has poor lens quality and color composition.

Since you are using it practically I wanted to know what is the practical value you can get from it. I can also look in other models like BCN-511G provided they can work with AbelCam.

Thanks.

Hello,

I don't think it's that bad. I am using it so that I can see my newborn while I am on the road while he's sleeping at night. I'm gone four days a week all over the United States and South America.

During the daytime, once you have it focused, it's a decent camera picture, it not HD, but it's descent. As for colors, when I pan around the room, it shows them well. Now I do not have Windows 7 installed anymore, I was using the RC for a while, but I don't know why it wouldn't work with it. You would just have to add your camera's IP address to the list of trusted sites and maybe lower the level of security for trusted sites one notch.

You know, their software, which you can download from their site, mybluejay.com, MAY not work with Windows 7, but I am betting it would. When I used it under Vista, I had to run it as administrator for it to see the network "drivers" (it listed the drivers, not the actual card). Other than that it worked fine in Vista.

So what I did is used their BlueJay software, configured the camera for my wireless network (I had to drop from WPA2 to WPA,no biggie where I live). Once it was on the network, I just used the built in camera server for a while. Http://cameraip and then let it run the active-x control, it works great on a local connection and really isn't that bad on a remote connection, it's just that stupid unsigned active-x control that I won't run on a public network like at a hotel, thus I started using Abelcam.

I do have it behind a firewall and I have a static IP address so I opened up a port to the camera for certain ip address ranges.

I take a lot of those reviews on the websites with a grain of salt. A lot of times you can tell that they expected HD quality for $85 bucks, also their technical ability has to be taken into account.

I will tell you that I have written to their support department twice to get a little more detail on their software and they have not written back yet. It may just be because of the questions I asked.

For $85 bucks it's a descent all around camera. Consider your application though. Like I said, mine is mainly at night and the IR is turned on, so the picture and color aren't going to really matter to me, the resolution is good though. The other thing is most of the time I am checking up on the little one while I am in the hotel shuttle using my AT&T Fuze. Which leads me to this:

The bluejay software will take the video stream and covert it to MMS, which is streamable to the Windows Media player in Windows Mobile phones, which right now I like better than the Abelcam software.

I like the Abelcam software for the interface when I am using my laptop. I have only tried viewing the camera once with my cell phone since starting to play with the Abelcam software. The IE that comes with Windows Mobile is not a very good browser, I get still images. If I use Opera browser, I can at least get some clips of it in a "stream."

I haven't played with all the codecs yet in Abelcam, so I am hoping I will find something that works with the Windows Mobile platform a little better.

I'm off to search the forums, I hope that long winded explanation helps you.

SSE:

Thanks, worked like a charm!! I didn't even bother reading the Proxy section, since I don't use a proxy. Taught me a lesson.

That worked great! I might modify a couple HTML files to put that link in there....

Abelcam guru's:

How do I tell if the data coming out of video.cgi is MJPG?

I have "test"ed it when configuring the camera URL using simply http://ipaddress/video.cgi and http://ipaddress/video.cgi?WIDTH=640&HEIGHT=480 (which is the image size according to the documentation and internal setup). The test passes, but I do not see an image. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Justin

I did a little network sniffing here. It looks like the camera is running linux, kernel 2.4.20, I'll have to look into that some more. Here is the first part of the TCP stream after the GET for video.cgi:

<SNIP>
GET /video.cgi HTTP/1.1

User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; )

Looks like MJPEG - AbelCam should be able to read this.
I need access to the camera to test from my end if you want to know more on how to configure it.
